An eBook reader is an electronic reading and study tool. The eBook reader has the capacity to store hundreds of books or documents at a time. A small size and low weight makes the eBook reader a very mobile device. The Amazon Kindle was the first eBook reader that caught the attention of the reading public. Several other companies are now in the market, noticeably the Kobo Touch eBook reader.
Differences Between eBook Readers and Tablet Computers
An eBook reader looks like a tablet computer. However, there are differences between the two devices. A tablet computer (Wikipedia) usually has color screen ability while few eBook readers (Wikipedia) have that capability. Tablet computers have a faster processor and while capable of reading eBooks, are not just a reading device. All eBook readers have a longer lasting battery. The screen of a tablet computer has higher refresh rate to make it suitable for use as an interactive computer. An eBook reader does not need to refresh as often and therefore uses less power.

In addition to the advantage of longer battery life, eBook readers use a different screen technology that makes text easier to read, even in bright sunlight. Any electronic device that can display text on a screen can read an eBook but not using the same technology.
eBook Market versus Tablet Computer Market
Comparing tablet computers to eBook readers you could be forgiven for thinking that the eBook reader was older technology that is being replaced by the tablet computer. However, for a reason, that has not been the case. Many people who buy and love eBook readers never use a computer.
If you want to know who uses eBook readers, go to any place where people wait sometimes for an extended time. At any airport, bus stop or train station you will find someone using an eBook reader. The person using the eBook reader will usually be at least 45 years old. Many people that age have never used a computer. They do not like them and do not intend to spend time learning how to use them. On the other hand, they see an eBook reader as ultimately practical and useful.
Expect functionality of eBook readers to approach that of tablet computers. eBook readers will have increased storage capacity and will offer models with color screens. These changes will ensure the future for eBook readers for many years to come.
